The beginning of this month, we went on our first camping trip as a family to Shenandoah, VA. The leaves were just starting to change and we had a wonderful time. One of my favorite parts was hiking part of the Appalachian Trail.
Our 4 year old made it the entire 1 1/2 mile hike and our 2 year old managed to stay awake up until 30 seconds before we finally made it to the scenic view.
After the hike, the kids were anxious to go to the campsite to set up the tent and eat dinner. We enjoyed Organic Elmo Pasta and hotdogs for dinner. Although, camping would not be complete without some smores.
The kids did not want to settle down and enjoyed chasing each other inside the tent…
Eventually they did settle and slept inside sleeping bags while Mommy and Daddy had a few minutes to relax in front of the fire well really relax in front of the smoke with an occasional flame. The wood we purchased on site was very wet and we had trouble making much of a fire but we did enjoy looking at the millions of stars…I forgot how many more stars you can see when you are in the mountains. We were also happy the rain held off until the middle of the night (and our tent stayed dry). It was very wet when we got up in the morning although the kids still wanted to play on the wet rocks.
We had a great weekend…away from the house…away from tv…away from chores…and just had fun being a family.
